· The house

Before it was a hotel

Casa Safrà was a printing works for sixty years. Here is what we kept.

Our building went up in 1924 as a printing works, with the presses on the ground floor and the paper store under the roof. For sixty years it printed labels for the saffron and spice merchants of the neighbourhood, which is where our name comes from.

What we kept

The floor tiles, the iron columns, the big windows of the press hall (now the breakfast room) and the hoist beam on the street front. The patio was the yard where the carts unloaded.

What we added

Twenty-four rooms, a lemon tree, and a terrace on the roof where the paper used to dry.
